From the morning’s first cup to an after-dinner sip, any time is tea time for tea enthusiasts. And for those who prefer porcelain tea cups, each sip can taste that much better. So here’s how to choose the best porcelain tea cup to get the most from every brew.
Porcelain tea cups and ceramic tea cups are made from clay. Ceramic tea cups are typically unglazed. This lets the surface absorb colors, aromas, and flavors. Ceramic tea cups are also usually thicker than porcelain tea cups.
Porcelain tea cups are usually coated in a protective glaze. The glaze prevents colors, aromas, and flavors from “sinking into” the cup.
Porcelain tea cups are made from clay that’s been kneaded and thrown against a pottery wheel. The porcelain gets worked and shaped, and then a handle is crafted and attached to the cup.
Once the tea cup is fully formed, it’s baked in a pottery kiln. After the cups are baked, they’re removed from the kiln and set aside to cool for about a day.
Then, porcelain tea cups are rinsed to remove dust and coated in a glaze. Glazed cups are then baked and cooled.
Rinse porcelain tea cups immediately after each use in hot water. This washes away leftover tea and prevents staining. Then, gently wipe the cups with a clean cloth and allow them to air dry completely. Avoid bleach, harsh detergents, and dishwashers.
Porcelain tea cups are safe to use as long as they’re taken care of properly. Porcelain can crack without proper care, including sudden changes in temperature. In which case, check for cracks in your tea cups before every use.
